Homily: November 10, 2023, Friday of the Thirty-first Week in Ordinary Time (End of World)

"Those who have never been told of Him shall see, and those who have never heard of Him shall understand."

While the Apostles went around preaching to the Jews, Paul was preaching to the Gentiles, because he wanted to reach ‘those who have never been told of Him’ and ‘those who have never heard of Him’.

Yesterday, during our priest study day, our speaker Fr. Patrick Mary said that we are living in a post-Christendom era. Evangelizing the Gentiles and pagans in the early days were about shifting their belief in pagan gods to the one true God. But today, we are dealing with people who believe in nothing, it is a bigger challenge.

They have been told of Him, but do not believe. They have heard of Him but refuse to understand.

How do we shake and wake people up to the truth?

When I was in middle school, there were Jehovah's Witnesses in our small town, and they distributed flyers everywhere proclaiming that the world was going to end. They warned people that for them to be saved, they should join Jehovah’s Witnesses. They said that the world would end on December 12, 1997.

My siblings and I were so worried because the date was very near. When we got home from school, we showed the flyers to our parents and anxiously told them that the world was ending soon.

My Papa took the flyers from us, crumpled them and threw them all away. He told us that JW had been doing that once every few years to recruit people to join them. Papa also reminded us that Jesus has already made it clear that no one knows the day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. So how would JW know?

However, we were still worried. Some of my friends suggested going for confessions before the world ended, so we did. Many others did the same, which caught the attention of our parish priest. He told us that Jesus gave us one sign about the end: "And the Good News of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the entire world as a testimony offered to all the nations, and then the end will come."

The fact was, and still is, that many places in the world have not yet received the Gospel. Those days, I silently wished that the missionaries would take their time to slowly evangelize so that the world would not end sooner.

Do you fear the end? I did, many others did and many still do. Many are afraid to face final judgement, afraid that their enjoyment of life will end, and are secretly scared of facing God, even for those who claim they do not believe.

But really, which is more frightening – not knowing when the world will end or not knowing the One who created the world?

Do you know someone who does not know Jesus nor heard of Him? Will you share Jesus with them? Amen.
