Homily: March 27, 2026, Saturday of the Fifth Week in Lent (Hardness of Heart)

 “So from that day on they planned to kill him.”

These are very strong and shocking words from today’s Gospel. During this season of Lent, we have been praying often in the responsorial psalm: “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”

Every morning, priests and religious pray this line in the Divine Office. It is like a daily reminder, a warning—to keep our hearts open to God.

But in today’s Gospel, we see the opposite.

The Pharisees and the chief priests witnessed so many miracles of Jesus. And the final one—the raising of Lazarus after four days in the tomb—is something truly extraordinary.

That one miracle alone should have led anyone to faith.

But instead of believing, they decide to kill Him. Why?

Because their hearts had become hard.

They chose not to see. They chose not to listen. They chose not to believe.

They closed their eyes to the truth and shut their ears to God’s voice.

And this is where today’s Gospel speaks to us.

Hardness of heart does not happen in one moment. It happens slowly—when we repeatedly ignore God’s voice, when we resist His grace, when we justify our sins, when we refuse to change.

Lent is a time to examine our hearts. Are we open to God?

Or have we allowed certain areas of our lives to become hard?

Today, let us pray in a special way for those whose hearts have become hardened—those who have turned away from God, those who resist the Gospel of life and love.

And let us also pray for ourselves:

That when we hear His voice, we may not harden our hearts,

but respond with humility, faith, and love.

Amen.

Did you listen attentively to the Gospel reading? Yes? Let me test you… What did Jesus say? Did He say, “Whoever eats my bread and drinks my wine?”  No!  “There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. He came to Jesus at night…” From this incident, we can learn a lot about Nicodemus. He was a Pharisee, a teacher of the Law, respectable and reputable in the Jewish circle of his time. But unlike the rest of the Jewish leaders, he recognized Jesus as sent by God, ‘for no one can do these signs that you are doing unless God is with him.” In the Gospel texts, Nicodemus appears only three times. Today’s Gospel presents the first time, he came to Jesus at night, quietly, almost secretly. Why? So they went and saw where he was staying.” “Come and See” is often an invitation to take an personal exploration and not just hear about something from others.  Many religious congregations use similar programs for those who are discerning a vocation to the priesthood or religious life, because often it is better to have an experience than simply reading or hearing about it before making a decision with regards the consecrated life. “Prepare to meet your God, O Israel.” This is the last verse from today’s first reading, and it reminds me of my school days. When I was in school, from Pre-K right up to high school, there were umpteen times when I was told, “Prepare to meet your principal.” And that meant trouble. Every principal that had led my school, has had the privilege of punishing me for being naughty or not doing my homework, and occasionally my parents too were called in to meet them. That was so embarrassing for them, and totally shameful for me. Yet it did not stop me from getting into trouble as I progressed through school. And so, whenever I go to Holy Family School here, and if I see students in the principal's office, it reminds me of my own experience in the past. I imagine that they too probably got into some trouble for not finishing their homework or misbehaving in class.  "Not only will I go down to Egypt with you; I will also bring you back here, after Joseph has closed your eyes." With this promise of God, Jacob was greatly comforted and confident to follow God’s direction to leave the land of Canaan and move to Egypt. Why so? In Oriental cultures, it is a tradition for people to be buried on their family property, within their home ground. You can imagine there could be generations of forefathers buried in the backyard of every house, resting in peace.  Thus, people would never sell their property nor move out of it because their forefathers were buried there, and it would also be their final resting place. Many people who went overseas to work would insist on being sent back to their home countries and be buried in their home ground when they die. Jacob had that same concern. He wanted to be buried in the same cave at Machpelah where Abraham and Sarah, and Isaac and Rebecca were buried. Otherwise, he believed he would not rest in peace....

Homily: July 21, 2023, Friday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time (Mercy Not sacrifice).

 "If you knew what this meant, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice’, you would not have condemned these innocent men."  Jesus is quoting the words God had spoken through the prophet Hosea in the past. He knows that the Pharisees were familiar with the phrase and background but obviously they did not seem to fully understand what it meant. Now, do we know what it means? The root word of mercy is "misericordia," which means a compassionate heart. It is the heart that matters, not the externals. In the first reading, we see God instructing Moses in detail how each Israelite family should offer a lamb and the whole community would sacrifice all the offerings together, share out the roasted meat and apply the lamb’s blood on door posts for the Lord to pass over, destroying only the Egyptians, not the Israelites. The Israelites were to celebrate this festival yearly through all generations as a remembrance of God’s saving grace and liberation of the Israelites from slavery...

 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child and nurse it for me, and I will repay you." The woman, therefore, took the child and nursed him. When the child grew, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter. Pharaoh’s daughter took the child to be her son but unknowingly, asked the real mother to nurse him. To save the boy’s life, the real mother nursed her own son to be given to Pharoah’s daughter. For more than thirty years thereafter, Moses lived in the palace.
