Homily: May 4, 2026 Monday of the Fifth Week of Easter (Love-Commandments)

“Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.”

Jesus is saying that if we love Him, then His Father and Him will come and make their home in us. And we know that if the Father and the Son come, the Holy Spirit will come too! When God comes, He does not just pay us a visit. He does not stay at a distance. He desires to live with us. He in us, and we in Him. Fully united.

If God truly dwells in us, what more do we need? His presence is enough. His love is enough. His power is enough. If God is with us, we have nothing to be afraid of.

But Jesus also gives us a condition: “Whoever loves me will keep my word.” We are called to love Him in action, by obeying His commandments, doing His will, keeping His teachings.

Now, this is where many people struggle. For some people, God’s commandments feel like a burden, they think His will dampens their desires and His teachings restrict their freedom.

But for those who have truly experienced God’s love,

they see it differently. God’s commandments give them confidence in life, His will directs them clearly the right way to go, His teachings liberate them from the slavery of sin.

They simply find joy in following Him. The Psalm says: “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119)

When we truly experience God, His word becomes sweet and light, not bitter and heavy. Isn’t that how it is when we truly love someone? We will be eager to serve, to slog, to labor, to go through thick and thin, to sacrifice ourselves for the good of the one we love. Willingly and happily we do it. We would not grudge or grumble. And no one needs to force or compel us. In fact, we might feel sad if the one we love does not need us to do anything for them!

In the same way, when we experience God’s love, we are ready to make sacrifices just to remain in His presence. And that is why God is eager to help us and do everything for us, just to keep us in His presence, because He is totally in love with us!

If only we can truly understand that, the immense and intense love of God for us. When we experience it, we too would want to love God the same way, we would want to keep His word and follow His commandments. We would want to please Him and give Him glory.

We would want Him, the same way He wants us.

Amen.
