Homily: June 30, 2026, Tuesday of the Thirteenth week in Oridnary Time (God's Favorite)

"You alone have I favored, more than all the families of the earth."

Through Amos, God is reaffirming His covenantal relationship with Israel as His chosen nation, as promised to Abraham. It is an affectionate expression of God's faithful love. The rest of this reading is about Amos warning Israel the consequences of turning away from God, intending to bring them back to faithfulness.

Despite all the disobedience and unfaithfulness, God loves Israel and continues to favor them specially. He has chosen them and will not back out of His choice. This is truly how God loves. Faithful, unwavering, unchanging.

I heard that when someone spoke with Mother Teresa, she would ignore everything else around her and give her full attention to that one person. She remained fully present for as long as that person needed her. St. John Paul II was also well known for giving people that same kind of attention. They did that well because they were really giving God their undivided attention in that person before them. Their attentiveness to someone in need was their prayer to God. 

In the same way when we pray to God, He too gives us His full undivided attention, the whole of heaven is directed toward us, listening to us pouring out our heart.

What a beautiful truth!

When we come before God in prayer, we are not just someone among billions, but we are at that very moment the only one to Him, His precious child who needs Him, and He listens to us with loving attention.

Nothing else matters more to Him than being fully present to us when we call on His name. We may not see or feel it, but truly, God loves for us call on Him, He loves to hear from us, He simply loves us.

Amen.

 “How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.” What Jesus says today is both challenging and true. Heaven is a popular destination, almost everyone wants to go there, but the road that leads to it, is not the most preferred, few people want to walk it. Our natural tendency is to take the most comfortable, convenient, and pleasurable route. The world constantly invites us to choose the easy path, promising happiness without sacrifice and fulfillment without commitment. Seriously, we all know those are lies.  "He burned the house of the LORD, the palace of the king, and all the houses of Jerusalem; every large building was destroyed by fire." In the Books of Kings, we have heard many glorious stories about the kingdom of David and Solomon. We have witnessed the mighty deeds of great prophets like Elijah and Elisha. Israel seemed powerful, blessed, and secure under God's protection. But when we come to the end of the Second Book of Kings, that glorious history comes to a heartbreaking conclusion. The northern kingdom had already been taken into exile, and now the southern kingdom, where the Temple of the Lord stood, also falls into the hands of its enemies.  “Such is my Gospel, for which I am suffering, even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained.” What a powerful statement from St. Paul. He may be chained, imprisoned, and treated like a criminal, yet he continued to preach the Gospel, because the Word of God can never be imprisoned, it is free forever. From the very beginning, God created the whole universe by speaking forth His word. He said, “Let there be light,” and light came into being. By His word, all creation came into existence. The same word that spoke to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and the prophets continues to speak to us today, guiding, challenging, and inspiring us. The Letter to the Hebrews reminds us: “Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).  “It is I. Do not be afraid.” One of my nephews and I used to do WhatsApp video calls. You know how those apps have masks and funny filters. One day I put on a scary mask, he threw the phone aside, and ran away. He got frightened. Later I called him and said , “It’s your uncle. Don’t worry.” After that we made an agreement—no more masks/ filters during our calls. Now he is fine! In today’s Gospel, the disciples see Jesus walking on the water, but they do not recognize Him. They think they are seeing a ghost, and they are terrified. Then Jesus speaks: “It is I. Do not be afraid.” The moment they hear His voice, fear begins to leave them. His words help them recognize Him. His voice brings peace. That is the power of the word of God. We see the opposite in Gethsemane.  But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.  Why did Jesus say this? Shouldn’t we resist and fight evil, so that we can keep ourselves holy? I remember years ago, I was traveling in a non-Christian country, and I had in my hand-carry bag, a zip-lock pouch of unconsecrated hosts for celebrating Mass during my trip. At customs, the officer checked my bag, took out the zip-lock pouch containing the hosts, then with one hand, crushed them all into pieces, and put them back into my bag.  “There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.”  Imagine that! The whole world would not be able to contain all the details of what Jesus did! Still, I often wish that we could have more stories about Jesus, more miracles recorded and more details about His life especially in His youth. Even though we have about 20 apocryphal gospels, which offer imaginative accounts of His childhood and youth, most of them were written two centuries after Jesus and can’t be fully verified for accuracy. The four Gospels remain silent about Jesus’ life between the ages of 12 to 30 before His public ministry.  “Saul then said to David: ‘You are in the right rather than I; you have treated me generously, while I have done you harm.’” I may not remember everything from my theology classes, but one thing from the study of Christology that fascinated me and stayed with me, was the person of David. Not just as an impressive king in the Old Testament but as a prominent faithful servant who prefigured Jesus.  The similarities are striking. David and Jesus were both born in Bethlehem. They were both from the same tribe and lineage. David was a shepherd; Jesus is the Good Shepherd. David wept in the Garden of Olives after being betrayed by his own son, Absalom. Jesus wept in the Garden of Gethsemane after being betrayed by Judas. David was a king anointed by God; Jesus is the King of kings sent by God.  “I have come to set the earth on fire.” “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” Jesus has told us He is meek and humble of heart, and we should learn from Him. We call Him the ‘Prince of peace’ and he prayed for us, “Father, that they may be one as we are one.” So, why would he want to set fire? Why would He cause division? First, the fire which Jesus wants to set for the earth is not a destructive fire, but that of the Holy Spirit. It is a purifying, sanctifying fire. Second, Jesus came to preach the truth, but many do not want to accept the truth. Those who reject will oppose those who accept. This is the division caused by hardness of the heart and blindness of the mind. Only when all have accepted the truth, then the world will be of one heart and mind, united and at peace.
