Holy Family School Mass Homily 

 Whenever someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely men?

How many of you are fans of Ronaldo? Any Messi fans here? What about Neymar?

We all have people we admire. Maybe it is a great soccer player, a singer, or someone else we look up to. Maybe some of you even have a favorite teacher here at school!

It is good to admire good people. It is good to have people we can look up to and learn from. But we also have to remember that no human person is perfect.

In today’s reading, St. Paul had some “fans” too. Paul had preached to the people first, and later another great preacher named Apollos came. Soon people started choosing sides. Some were saying, “I belong to Paul,” while others were saying, “I belong to Apollos.”

But Paul basically tells them, “Don’t make this about me!” Why?

Because Paul did not want people simply to be his fans. He wanted them to be followers of Jesus Christ.

And that is true for us too.

We can be fans of Ronaldo or Messi. We can admire our parents, teachers, friends, priests, and other people who inspire us. But there is only one person who should always be first in our lives: Jesus.

There is a famous saying: “Put first things first.”

For us as Christians, Jesus is first.

Before Ronaldo. Before Messi. Before our friends. Even before the people we admire most.

And being a follower of Jesus means more than saying, “I love Jesus.” It means trying to live like Jesus—being kind when someone is left out, forgiving someone who hurts us, helping someone who needs us, and loving others as Jesus loves us.

So today, remember this:

We may be fans of many people, but we belong to Jesus Christ.

And if we belong to Jesus, let us try every day to become a little more like him.

 “Now the natural man does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it.” What St. Paul says in today’s first reading is something we can easily recognize in our world. There are people who do not believe in God, and there are others who mock Christian beliefs. Things that are most sacred to us—the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the Incarnation, the Assumption of Mary, and many other mysteries of our faith—may seem like foolishness to someone who does not share our faith. Sometimes, when we hear comments or see videos mocking our faith, our first reaction may be anger or offense. But perhaps our response should be different. Rather than becoming angry, we can respond with patience and prayer. St. Paul reminds us that the things of God cannot be understood by human reasoning alone; they are spiritually discerned.  “It is I. Do not be afraid.” One of my nephews and I used to do WhatsApp video calls. You know how those apps have masks and funny filters. One day I put on a scary mask, he threw the phone aside, and ran away. He got frightened. Later I called him and said , “It’s your uncle. Don’t worry.” After that we made an agreement—no more masks/ filters during our calls. Now he is fine! In today’s Gospel, the disciples see Jesus walking on the water, but they do not recognize Him. They think they are seeing a ghost, and they are terrified. Then Jesus speaks: “It is I. Do not be afraid.” The moment they hear His voice, fear begins to leave them. His words help them recognize Him. His voice brings peace. That is the power of the word of God. We see the opposite in Gethsemane. When the soldiers came to arrest Jesus, they asked, “Are you Jesus the Nazorean?” Jesus answered: “I AM.” And the Gospel says they drew back and fell to the ground. The same Lord. The same voice. Homily: June 1, 2026 Monday of the Nineth Week in Ordinary Time (Grow in Virtues)

 “Make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue.” Many of us, including myself, would be happy if we could just live every day without committing any serious sin. And to be able to just live out the basic life of a faithful – pray daily and receive the sacraments regularly – that should be enough and would be good with God. But St. Peter is challenging us to grow, go beyond the minimum, he says: “Supplement your faith with virtue.”  Faith, like health, cannot be stagnant. The basic daily meals may not be enough to keep us healthy and strong enough to meet growing needs, we may need supplements to add nourishment and nutrients. Faith too needs to grow and bear fruit, so supplement it with virtue. What are the virtues to add on? Cardinal virtues are prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude. Theological virtues are faith, hope, and charity. Just avoiding sin is not enough, we need to pack in virtues to be strong. We must bear fruit with our faith. The Christian life ...

Homily: July 18, 2026, Tuesday of the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Remember death)

 “It is I who deal death and give life.” These words from our Responsorial Psalm today are actually not taken from the Book of Psalms. They come from the Book of Deuteronomy, chapter 32. They remind us of a fundamental truth of our faith: God is the author of life. Our life comes from God, belongs to God, and ultimately returns to God. This phrase beautifully connects our first reading and the Gospel today. In the first reading, the prophet Ezekiel speaks against the prince of Tyre, a man who had become proud because of his success, wealth, wisdom, and accomplishments. And so the prophet reminds him of one simple reality: you are only a man, and you will die. There are certain realities in life that quickly reveal our limitations. An illness can make a powerful and independent person suddenly dependent on others.  “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me.” There is an often-used phrase in the Alpha program: “Alpha is designed to fail if the Holy Spirit does not show up.” This implies that since Alpha has not failed despite itself and continues to grow from 1977, the Holy Spirit is at work in the program. I think that is true not only for Alpha but for the Church and the whole Christian life. Church would have been totally destroyed, and the Christian life would have been completely crushed with so much internal struggle and trouble, external persecution and attacks, if we are without the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, the Church would not survive, life would have ended, humanity would no longer exist. Yesterday, here in our parish, 25 young people received the sacrament of Confirmation.  “But rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice exultantly.” Has this ever happened to you before? When everything went wrong. There are days when I made good plans, I did my best, but my plans were overturned, my efforts came out wrong, then problems and troubles arose one after another. Those days were really frustrating, I even question Him why He didn’t come to help me and where He was when I was suffering. In those moments, my prayers became complaints. Now looking back, those may have been the very moments when God was allowing me to unite my small suffering with Jesus on the cross.  “… you shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people… You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation.” What beautiful assurance from our God, stated so clearly in our first reading today. Imagine the Almighty Creator of the universe saying to us mere human beings that we are His special possession, that we are so dear to Him. He, Who is all powerful, declaring His endearing love for us, who are nothing. We are truly blessed. Deep in every person’s heart, there is a longing to be special to somebody, to belong, to be loved and valued. I have a friend from childhood. His name is Dijol. I have known him since kindergarten. "For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you." This is one of the more practical teachings of Jesus, and from our own life experiences, we know it to be true. When we show love, people often respond with love. When we are compassionate, we usually receive compassion in return. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” God’s mercy is constant, consistent, unconditional. We deserve death and punishment, but God waives it off, taking on our death and punishment on Himself. That is mercy. And He tells us to do the same, not on our own strength, but we can imitate, reflect and emulate how God does it. God is merciful, because He loves truly and is generous.  “For since death came through man, the resurrection of the dead came also through man.” Sin and death are connected, but Christ has come to break that connection and give us life. In his Letter to the Romans, St. Paul says, “The wages of sin is death.” Sin separates us from God, and God is the source of life.  God created Adam and Eve for life and friendship with him. But through their disobedience, sin entered the world, and with sin came death.  But when God prepared the world for the coming of his Son, he gave Mary a unique grace. From the first moment of her conception, she was preserved from original sin.  We can see Mary as the new Eve. Eve was created without sin, but she disobeyed God. Mary, by God's grace, responded differently. When the angel came to her, she said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
