Homily: September 4, 2026, Friday of the Twenty second Week in Ordinary Time (Do not Judge)

 “Therefore, do not make any judgment before the appointed time, until the Lord comes.”

It is very difficult to live without judging others. Knowingly or unknowingly, we often judge people based on what we see, especially those who are different from us. But we are all different. Our life situations are different, our ideas are different, and the ways we were raised are different.

There is a beautiful saying often attributed to Philo of Alexandria: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.” How true that is. We often do not know what another person is carrying in his or her heart.

Jesus also tells us, “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.” So how do we overcome a judgmental attitude? One way is by becoming more empathetic. Instead of immediately judging someone, we can try to know the person, listen to their story, and understand why they may think or act differently from us.

St. Paul reminds us today that the final judgment belongs to God. God knows what is hidden in our hearts. Yet God looks upon us with compassion and love. He is patient with us, giving us time and grace to change, to grow, and to become better.

As God’s children, we are called to show that same patience and compassion toward one another.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks about new wine and new wineskins. Jesus is the new wine, bringing us the new law of love. We are called to become new wineskins—hearts renewed by his grace, capable of receiving that love, preserving it, and sharing it with others.

So today, instead of judging, let us try to understand; instead of condemning, let us show compassion; and instead of looking only at what is different in another person, let us try to see that person as God sees them—with love.

 “I will not reject anyone who comes to me.” They are not just words. They are a promise from Jesus, a promise that gives us hope, especially as we remember our loved ones who have gone before us.  “Follow me.” On this feast of St. Matthew, we hear Matthew’s own account of his calling. Jesus saw him sitting at the customs post and said just two words: “Follow me.” And Matthew gets up and follows him. No second thought. No long discernment. No plan for the future.  “No prophet is accepted in his own native place.” I have experienced this personally many times. Years ago, when I was newly ordained and was about to preach at a relative’s wedding, my oldest sister, lacking confidence with my ability, whispered to me, “Make sure you do a good job.” I whispered back, “Why don’t you do the preaching!” Last year I went to my nephew’s First Holy Communion. The parish priest asked if I could give the homily, and I happily agreed. The night before the Mass, my second sister came to my room and questioned me, “Do you really want to do the homily? One of my greatest blessings is being born into a traditional Catholic family and raised by God-fearing parents.
