Homily, March 19, 2022, Solemnity of St. Joseph

 “Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame…”

In India and most of the world, men are expected to be strong, powerful, decisive and outspoken. Oftentimes, quiet, meek and gentle men are considered weak.

Are these qualities signs of weakness?

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” It is in quietness that we become more conscious of God’s presence.

Jesus teaches, “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.” Meekness is humility before God and allowing Him to take over as Master of life.

St. Francis de Sales said, “Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength.” To be gentle is to have self-control, real strength is to have control over self, not others.

Yes, these describe St. Joseph very well. Quiet, meek and gentle. St. Joseph was a righteous man. Discovering that Mary was carrying a child from another, before he knew it was conceived from the Holy Spirit, Joseph had every right to expose her for being unfaithful to the betrothal, but he gave up his own rights so that Mary was protected from the law. His decision to quietly divorce her was to free her from the bonds of the betrothal to be with the father of the child. He was unwilling to expose Mary to shame, yet he willed for her safety and happiness.

Can any man be so humble as to bear such injustice to himself? And so generous as to offer freedom to others, quietly?

How many of us would do that - to protect someone else’s wrong by swallowing our own pride and forgoing our own rights, gently?

In my life, I have personally encountered such a man. My father had these qualities, my mother was the opposite. So, in my household, mommy was the one who won all arguments and had her way in decisions. But at the end of mommy’s life, she realised and admitted that papa was the one who had been right. My papa had never insisted on his views nor complained about mommy being wrong.

St. Joseph’s beautiful qualities are not signs of weakness. Neither are they unrealistic. They are qualities of righteousness, of faith and trust in God, of love and respect for Mary, his wife. These are qualities of spiritual strength which every one of us can imitate and receive through grace, if we ask for it.

St. Joseph, holy and humble husband of the blessed virgin Mary, pray for us.

 But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.  Why did Jesus say this? Shouldn’t we resist and fight evil, so that we can keep ourselves holy? Homily: June 16, 2026, Monday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time (Mercy)

 “Since he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his time.” Yesterday we heard the disturbing story of Naboth and the terrible injustice committed against him by King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. Their actions were cruel, wrong and sinful. They deserved judgement and punishment, especially Jezebel, who orchestrated the whole scheme. Yet today we see something remarkable. When Ahab humbled himself, fasted, and repented, God relented. He delayed the punishment that had been announced. What does this show us about God? It shows us that God’s mercy is greater than our sins. For thirteen years, Pope Francis reminded the Church of this beautiful truth: God's very name is mercy. God is just, but He is also infinitely merciful. He never ceases to seek out the sinner and offer the way back to Him. We see this throughout the events in Sacred Scripture. Homily: May 14, Feast of St. Mathias (Chosen)

"It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you”.  Today, we celebrate the feast of St. Matthias, who was not at first one of the twelve nor part of the inner circle of Jesus. He was chosen later into the college of apostles, to take the place of Judas. In the first reading, we saw how the apostles prayed and asked the Lord to show them whom He had chosen, someone who had accompanied them ‘the whole time’. They then cast their lots and God’s choice was revealed. Did God choose Matthias only at that point when the apostles had to replace Judas? Or did God already planned and prepared Matthias ‘the whole time’ when he was following Jesus throughout His ministry, and remained in the community even after the crucifixion? St. Paul says, “He chose us in him, before the foundation of the world…” Can you imagine, right up to this point in your life and mine, you and I are present right now in this holy place not by chance, but by choice. Homily: June 13, 2026, Memorial of The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary

 aking the yoke of oxen, he slaughtered them; he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh and gave it to his people to eat. Then he left and followed Elijah as his attendant.” I have heard this passage many times during my seminary days and throughout the past ten years of priesthood, especially during retreats. It is such a beautiful scene in the Old Testament describing how Elisha received and accepted God’s call. Elisha was plowing in the field when Elijah called him. He not only left what he was doing, but he also slaughtered the oxen and burned the very equipment he had been using. He did not want to go back to his old life. It was a total commitment to God.  “… you shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people… You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation.” What beautiful assurance from our God, stated so clearly in our first reading today. Imagine the Almighty Creator of the universe saying to us mere human beings that we are His special possession, that we are so dear to Him. He, Who is all powerful, declaring His endearing love for us, who are nothing. We are truly blessed. Deep in every person’s heart, there is a longing to be special to somebody, to belong, to be loved and valued. I have a friend from childhood. His name is Dijol. I have known him since kindergarten. First, congratulations to all of you for successfully completing middle school! Are you happy that you are graduating? I graduated from middle school in 1999. That was twenty-five years ago! We did not have a graduation ceremony like this because my school provided pre-K to grade 12 classes all on the same campus. So, we did not leave school, we just moved up to another grade, another class, but thankfully, our teachers organized something simple for us to celebrate that milestone. I remember during my school days, the hours in class seemed to pass very slowly, but now I look back, time seems to fly by with rocket speed! Homily: June 12, 2026, Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (learn from me)

 “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves.” Jesus spoke these words at the beginning of His public ministry. Instead of entering His important mission with pride and great fanfare, Jesus entered meek and humble. And He says, “…learn from me…” At the end of His earthly life on the cross, when the soldier pierced His side, blood and water gushed forth from His heart — a visible sign of His total sacrifice, His love for humanity. He truly was meek and humble of heart, accepting a humiliating death despite being a King and not having committed any crime. He loved us till the very end. According to an ancient Christian tradition, it was said that the soldier who pierced the side of Jesus, was suffering from very poor eyesight, but when some of Jesus’ blood and splattered on his eyes, his eyesight was fully restored, he was healed.  "There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known." Do you have secrets? Are you worried about your secrets being revealed? Do you keep secrets for someone else? Have you been tempted to leak out the secret to another person? Something I realized growing up in a large family, is that in big families, there are no secrets, there is no way to hide any secret, not for long. Someone will somehow find out something. When I was in school, the period after exams is the secretive time. The teachers would enter our examination results in our school journal, to be shown to our parents for their signature, then return to the teachers next day. My brother and I would always get poor grades, and we would hide our school journals, with a plan to only show to our parents the next day just before leaving for school, so that there would not be much time for them to scold us, they could just sign and we would run off quickly to school.  “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing.”  What is the only one thing needed? In the first reading, God visited Abraham in the heat of the day. Abraham saw three men approaching his tent and sensed something special about them. In normal circumstances, Abraham simply could have acknowledged them and gone on with his work, but he did not. He dropped his work, ran to them, bowed before them, presented himself at their service, and got his household to prepare a good meal for them. He paid attention to their needs, and to what they had to tell him. In the Gospel, Jesus visits His dear friends Martha and Mary. Martha busies herself to prepare food to serve her special guest.  Let the house of Israel say, "His mercy endures forever." Let the house of Aaron say, "His mercy endures forever." Let those who fear the LORD say, "His mercy endures forever." We sang these verses in today’s responsorial psalm. God’s mercy endures forever. ‘Forever’ means from the very beginning to the very end of time, God’s mercy ‘endures’. What does it endure? Does it endure just the length of time? No, more than that. It endures the breadth of our sins, and the depth of our hard-heartedness. When Adam and Eve sinned against God, they had to bear the consequences of their sins. Even then, we read the scene of God putting together some garments for Man and Woman to cover themselves, who became conscious of their nakedness.
