Homily: July 25, 2022, Feast of Saint James, Apostle

 “The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.”

Wow, what a mother. Actively taking charge of and deciding her sons’ future.

I think Mrs. Zebedee was an Indian. Because typical Indian mothers tend to control their children’s life decisions, and typical Indians use social connections to get ahead.

In India, if you know someone who has power, authority or influence, you can get recommendations to jobs, schools, offices etc. If you only did well in your exams even with excellent results, you may not necessarily get admission into the college or university of your choice if you did not have someone prominent, like a politician, to recommend you. 

Similarly, if you want to start a business, you will need someone with great influence to recommend you, along with the basic official documentation and application. So, it is not what you know, but whom you know, that will help you achieve success in life.

That’s why I escaped to USA. Because one of the many things I like about the American culture is equal opportunity for everyone based on your own merit. You work hard, you are smart, you are honest, you are responsible, or you have done well in school, these personal qualities and qualifications are recognised and assessed fairly. Your own effort determines your future to a large extent.

So how does Jesus respond? In this gospel, Jesus sounds like an American. He is not pressured by the mother’s recommendation but questions the two sons’ abilities by laying down the demands of the job – “Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?”

Our salvation is our responsibility. God has given us gifts and talents to walk the way. Our salvation is also God’s desire so He sends personal angels to help us. And those who have gone before us, the saints, are supporting us too.

And above all these, we have our blessed Mother Mary, who will not just help us become qualified and worthy, but she will ultimately recommend us to Jesus. She will prepare us well for the chalice of life.

Mary is our perpetual help in this life and on our journey to the Kingdom of Jesus. Mary, our Mother, pray for us. Amen.

 “Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.” Every one of our Christian journey begins with a very simple thing: “Yes”. At baptism, the priest asks the parents or the candidates three questions: Do you renounce Satan? Do you reject sin? Do you reject all that leads you away from God? "You alone have I favored, more than all the families of the earth." Through Amos, God is reaffirming His covenantal relationship with Israel as His chosen nation, as promised to Abraham. It is an affectionate expression of God's faithful love. The rest of this reading is about Amos warning Israel the consequences of turning away from God, intending to bring them back to faithfulness. Despite all the disobedience and unfaithfulness, God loves Israel and continues to favor them specially. He has chosen them and will not back out of His choice. This is truly how God loves.  "He burned the house of the LORD, the palace of the king, and all the houses of Jerusalem; every large building was destroyed by fire." In the Books of Kings, we have heard many glorious stories about the kingdom of David and Solomon. We have witnessed the mighty deeds of great prophets like Elijah and Elisha. Israel seemed powerful, blessed, and secure under God's protection. But when we come to the end of the Second Book of Kings, that glorious history comes to a heartbreaking conclusion. The northern kingdom had already been taken into exile, and now the southern kingdom, where the Temple of the Lord stood, also falls into the hands of its enemies. Holy Family School Mass:  Then they asked him, "Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?" Signs are very helpful in our everyday life. When I first came to this church, I had a hard time finding the confessional. There were no signs. I thought it might be somewhere in the vestibule and after going down the stairs, I ended up at the restrooms. Directional signs tell us where to go, spiritual signs tell us what to do. When Jesus spoke about the destruction of the temple, He was also warning the disciples about fake news and scammers. So simply looking for signs may not help, because there are misleading and false signs that will only lead to more confusion and wrong turns.  “Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them?” These questions from Jesus in today’s Gospel invites us to reflect on the secret of a powerful prayer. What makes prayers powerful? When we pray for a particular intention, and the intention is fulfilled, we conclude that the prayer was powerful. Jesus questions us to reflect and realize that God is the generous One, who gives us the rights to call out to Him, day and night.  The one begotten by God He protects, and the Evil One cannot touch him. Through our baptism, each one of us was claimed by God. We were called by name, welcomed into the Church, and sealed with the presence of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. From that moment on, we belong to God. Because of this, the Evil One has no power over a baptized Christian. He cannot simply take control of us.  “Observe them carefully, for thus will you give evidence of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations, who will hear of all these statutes and say, 'This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people.’” In today’s first reading, Moses exhorts the people of Israel to be carefully obedient to God’s Law. It is emphasized that if they remain faithful to these statutes, they will be a great nation, ‘truly a wise and intelligent people’. We know how the story developed after this - they became arrogant, rebellious, and disobedient to God, their glory did not last, eventually they ended up in exile and slavery.  But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.  Why did Jesus say this? Shouldn’t we resist and fight evil, so that we can keep ourselves holy? I remember years ago, I was traveling in a non-Christian country, and I had in my hand-carry bag, a zip-lock pouch of unconsecrated hosts for celebrating Mass during my trip.  “How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.” What Jesus says today is both challenging and true. Heaven is a popular destination, almost everyone wants to go there, but the road that leads to it, is not the most preferred, few people want to walk it. Our natural tendency is to take the most comfortable, convenient, and pleasurable route.
