Homily: June 6, 2023, Tuesday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time (Love& Honor).

 An evil report he shall not fear;

his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.

His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear

till he looks down upon his foes.

This is our responsorial psalm today, in response to the first reading we heard about Tobit and his wife, arguing over a goat which he thought was stolen. Tobit was a righteous man, faithful to God all the days of his life. The Israelites were living in exile under oppression and Tobit became blind and dependent on his wife's work. His kinsmen grieved at his condition, but Tobit did not lose his faith in God. He also did not lose his integrity and moral values. He did not forget his obligation to be steadfast in God’s laws.

At every wedding, we witness bridal couples making their vows to each other and promising to be faithful to each other ‘in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love and honor each other all the days of their life’.

What a beautiful way to seal love for the other! What a courageous way to assure companionship and faithfulness! That is what keeps relationships strong, satisfying and secure, if no one breaks their promise, of course.

Last night, I was thinking, shouldn’t we also strive to build such a beautiful relationship with God?

When our days are easy, trouble-free, comfortable, and peaceful, it is very easy to praise and give thanks to God and be satisfied with our relationship with our Lord. But when hardships, troubles, illnesses, and difficulties hit us, are we still able to continue our praising and thanksgiving? Or would we be complaining and threatening to break the relationship with God and stop believing in Him?

I am sure we know of someone who has done it – detached from God, divorced from the church, going separate ways. We are such unfaithful people!

Even if we ourselves have not made such decisions, the thought might just have crossed our minds, especially in bad times and in sickness. Our faithfulness gets tested.

But our God is the ever faithful One. He holds on, He waits, He perseveres. He is the One keeping up His side of the promises and thus the relationship continues.

May we also learn to keep going. Our commitment to God should transcend circumstances, just as married couples do. Let us pledge our unwavering devotion to the Lord, promising to honor and love Him all the days of our lives, in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. Amen.
