Homily: October 20, 2023 Friday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time (Secrets).

"There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known."

Do you have secrets? Are you worried about your secrets being revealed?

Do you keep secrets for someone else? Have you been tempted to leak out the secret to another person?

Something I realized growing up in a large family, is that in big families, there are no secrets, there is no way to hide any secret, not for long. Someone will somehow find out something.

When I was in school, the period after exams is the secretive time. The teachers would enter our examination results in our school journal, to be shown to our parents for their signature, then return to the teachers next day.

My brother and I would always get poor grades, and we would hide our school journals, with a plan to only show to our parents the next day just before leaving for school, so that there would not be much time for them to scold us, they could just sign and we would run off quickly to school.

The plan never worked. Because we have sisters.

They always got good grades and would be all excited to show our parents for their signatures. My brother and I would be so anxious and worried that they would know our secret journal hiding place. There was no peace.

And you know what? My sisters would always be able to find our journals and show it to our parents. How did they know our journal hiding place?

Nothing concealed will not be revealed. No secrets will not be known. My brother and I would receive caning from our parents that very day. The following year, we would try again with a new hiding place.

Hiding the truth is a very tiring game. The fear and anxiety, we need to keep looking out for people who went too near to the truth, we became suspicious of everyone, we cannot relax, we must always be on our guard, we did not have peace.

It is the same when people hide from God. They sin and think that God does not know. They feel guilty of their sins, but think that no one will ever know. They pretend to be fine but are burdened in their hearts. They step away from Church and believe that the distance will prevent their sins from being seen. They live in denial, in the shadows of others who are like them.

Why hide from God, who sees and knows everything?

Why hide from God, who loves us despite our sins?

Why bear the burden in our hearts when God wants to take it over from us? If we let Him.

Jesus assures us in today's gospel: "Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows." Let us share this good news with others who are still hiding. Amen.
