Homily: March 31,2026 Tuesday of the Holy Week (Light and darkness )
“I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”
Have you ever heard this quote by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: "The nearer the dawn the darker the night."
As we enter further into Holy Week, we are getting very near to Easter, and we see the events leading up are also getting darker and more intense.
And today, we hear the words from the prophet Isaiah in the first reading, reminding us of our role in the salvation of the world, that He will make us a light in the darkness that is to come upon earth.
He has chosen each one of us personally.
He has called us by name.
While the world is in darkness, we are not to be consumed by it. He has made us to be a light, to shine in this darkness, to break it.
Our light does not just shine for others to see, it is a light of holiness, for others to reach to God.
It is a light of grace, for others to receive God’s goodness. It is a light that reflects Christ to others, so that they can see clearly the path that leads to Jesus.
Darkness leads to confusion, destruction, and ultimately death, because no one can see clearly in the dark.
Today’s Gospel shows us how Judas was blinded by evil darkness, that even though he walked with Jesus, heard His teaching and witnessed His miracles, he still chose the path that led him to despair. He was blinded.
When Jesus handed the morsel to Judas, He was reaching out and offering Him a chance to turn back. God does not force us, but He is constantly reaching out to us, to offer us a choice, life or death. Judas chose to go into the night.
All through Lent, what have you been choosing?
Very soon, at the Easter Vigil, many people will enter the Church through Baptism. They will receive the light of Christ, symbolised by the lit candle handed to them. They are to bring this light to the nations, to share the salvation they have received with others.
The light of Christ is a mission. We are Christ’s walking candle. Have you been going places to be consumed by darkness or to bring the light?
We have a few more days to prepare ourselves, not all is lost, He is still reaching out to us, to come back, to become once more the light He has called us to be. The world needs the light. And God has chosen us to carry it. Amen.
