Homily: October 25, 2026, Monday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time (Spiritually Crippled)
“And a woman was there who for eighteen years had been crippled by a spirit.”
Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus healing people who had suffered from illnesses for many years. We remember the woman who suffered from hemorrhages for twelve years, the man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years, and today, a woman who had been crippled for eighteen years.
For eighteen long years, this woman was bent over, unable to stand straight. She could not even look up. We have probably seen people suffering from similar conditions, especially in their old age. But imagine living like that for eighteen years, always looking down, unable to lift your head and enjoy the beauty of the world around you.
But there is something deeper in today's Gospel. St. Luke tells us that she had been crippled by a spirit. Her suffering was not simply physical; there was also a spiritual bondage. And Jesus came not only to heal her body but also to set her free.
We may not be physically crippled by an evil spirit as this woman was, but we can become spiritually crippled.
Sometimes, the devil does not need to bend our bodies; he only needs to bend our hearts and minds.
Sin, hatred, jealousy, resentment, guilt, fear, and worldly attachments can slowly bend us down spiritually. We become so occupied with the things of this world that we forget to look up. We fail to recognize God's presence, His blessings, and the beauty of life around us.
Sometimes, we are so weighed down by our past mistakes that we cannot see the hope God has prepared for our future.
And what does Jesus do in today's Gospel? He sees this woman, calls her over, and says, "Woman, you are set free of your infirmity." Immediately, she stands up straight and begins glorifying God.
The woman does not even ask Jesus for healing. Jesus sees her suffering and takes the initiative to set her free.
That is the love and mercy of our God. He sees the burdens we carry, even those we cannot express in words.
Let us ask, What is keeping me spiritually bent over? What prevents me from looking up to God?
Whatever it may be, Jesus has the power to set us free.
