Homily: May 31, 2026, Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity (Sons and Daughters of God)
“God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…”
God loves the world, that means all of us.
I once noticed a parishioner’s phone case which has on it these large letters boldly declaring: “I am a daughter of the Most High King…”
Followed with smaller wordings: “…who is not moved by the world, for my God is with me and goes before me. I do not fear because I am His.”
I thought to myself: wow, a great reminder every time we pick up our phones. We all need that.
Every day we are bombarded by noise from all directions, telling us falsely who we should be and how we should live. The world tells us our worth depends on our success, our achievements, our appearance, our popularity and so on. Causing many to feel totally unworthy, and a failure.
The worldly standard is not high, but it is false and misleading. Nobody’s real worth should be measured against external benchmarks.
But today, on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, God reminds us of our true worth, based on our real identity. We are beloved sons and daughters of God, and we are worth every ounce of His love, not because we deserve it, but because that is who God is – love.
There’s a quote: Satan knows our names but calls us by our sins. God knows our sins but calls us by our names.
On our own, we are not worthy of anything, but in God’s eyes, we are worthy of everything, including every drop of His Son’s blood, every breath of His life. And so He gave His only Son to redeem us and restore us to our identity: sons and daughters of God – never forgotten, eternally loved.
God the Father created us. God the Son redeemed us. God the Holy Spirit dwells within us. This all-powerful Trinitarian God of the universe has given us the freedom to call Him “Abba, Father.”
So what is the problem?
Our own forgetfulness. We get distracted by the world and forget our glorious identity. We live like we do not belong to God at all, we live like we have no one to defend us or depend on, we live on our own strength, forgetting there is God who loves us.
The truth is: we belong to God and God alone.
The greatest proof of God's love stands before us in the Cross. God chose to reveal the depth of His love through the ultimate sacrifice. Because the only way for us to be truly and fully saved, is to love Him the same way He did, to love one another the same way He did – through the ultimate sacrifice of laying down our life for another.
The Cross is not simply a symbol of suffering; it is a symbol of divine love. God gave His only begotten beloved Son, to save all His beloved created sons and daughters.
Whenever we are tempted to doubt God's love, we should look at the Cross.
There we see the Father who gave His Son.
There we see the Son who gave His Spirit.
There we see the Holy Spirit, given to us, poured out upon the world.
God revealed Himself to Moses: “The LORD, the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.”
This is our God.
The Trinity is not a mystery to be understood; it is a relationship to be imitated. It will take more than a lifetime to fully understand ‘three persons One God’, but it takes just one moment to commit to imitating this One and Only merciful and gracious God – simply say and mean it with our heart: “Thy will be done!”
God’s will is love.
The purpose of our life on earth is to learn to love like God. Heaven is living forever in the perfect love of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
We are surrounded by the love of the Trinity. We are filled with the love of the Trinity. We are called to love in the way of the Trinity.
As St. Paul tells the Corinthians, he tells us the same:
Brothers and sisters, rejoice. Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.
Amen.
